Digital Signage Content delivery via Media RSS

Using a Screenfeed Media RSS feed, your server or players can automatically download the latest content and check back for updates throughout the day - keeping your screens fresh.

Feed your screen only the freshest content

Media RSS offers an easy method to tell your systems that new content is available and when that content is old and should be removed from your screen.

Pre-downloading & scheduled download

Screenfeed's Media RSS feeds allow your software and devices to pre-download the content to the media player prior to playback or even schedule limited times for download.

Standards-based XML plays nice with others

Screenfeed is committed to supporting open standards. Yahoo! originally defined Media RSS way back in 2004 and Screenfeed has offered our content using it since our launch. In addition to the link to the media file, our feeds include the title, description, duration, file type, and published date.

Video, Images and SWF file feeds

Depending on the content in your subscription your Media RSS feeds may include video, images or swf files.

RSS Tickers vs. Media RSS

Please note that Media RSS is different than a standard RSS text feed. Many digital signage software systems support text-based RSS (for those ugly tickers); but Screenfeed’s media-rich content is delivered over Media RSS (MRSS) with references to the media files. Look for digital signage software that supports Media RSS or ask your software provider to add support for it.

Using a Screenfeed Media RSS feed

  1. Use one of the demo feeds above, or subscribe to a live feed through our online content store.
  2. Add an instance of a Media RSS media item into your playlist and use your Screenfeed feed address as the URL.
  3. Set Feed Properties as your software allows. For graphics based feeds you may be able to set how many items to download, how long to play each item, playback order (random or sequential), and frequency of updates.
  4. Once the feed has been published to your playlist, your software or device should connect to the Screenfeed Media RSS feed and download the current items in the feed; then continue to connect to the feed to download new items and delete items no longer in the feed at the frequency you set.

That's it! Your content will continue to refresh - keeping your audience interested.

Software Compatibility with Media RSS

Digital Signage Software providers with known Media RSS support

We've had the privilege of working with a number of digital signage software companies on integration with our feeds over Media RSS. Below are a list of known companies who support this standard.

What if my software does not support Media RSS?

Though we love Media RSS, the reality is most of our customers use software that does not yet support Media RSS. For these customers we simply provide a Flash .swf or HTML file they schedule that will connect to our Media RSS feed and playback the content. Other delivery options include a Single File URL, FTP and our own custom software.

By the way, if your software company does not support Media RSS - ask them why? We’ve found many have added it after being asked by a Screenfeed customer.
